What is a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP)?

An SWP is a facility offered by mutual funds that allows you to withdraw a fixed amount of money at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly, or annually) from your existing lumpsum investments. It is commonly used by retirees to set up a regular monthly pension stream while letting the remaining corpus compound in the fund.

SWP vs SIP

While an SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) is used to accumulate wealth by making periodic deposits, an SWP is used to systematically withdraw wealth. Because withdrawals reduce the investment balance, the rate of annual growth must ideally match or exceed the withdrawal rate to prevent depleting the principal completely.
